Working With The Community
As a small business operating in a international market, Tenzing is in the unusual position of being able to identify with issues on both a local and global level. As a company, Tenzing encourages its staff to become involved in projects at a local level whilst supporting global initiatives in areas such as climate change.
Tenzing Goes Carbon Neutral
Climate change and global warming are among today's most pressing environmental issues, brought about by increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Transport is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions – greenfleet.com.au
As a consulting firm, Tenzing personnel spend a significant amount of time traveling to our clients’ sites, both in Australia and overseas. Tenzing has recently undertaken an assessment of the greenhouse gas impact of its activities and has subsequently purchased almost 500 trees from Greenfleet Australia in order to offset the estimated 133.6 tonnes of carbon emissions generated, in a quest to be to be carbon neutral for 2008.
Since 1997, Greenfleet has planted almost three million trees on behalf of Australian motorists and businesses. These trees will form permanent forests and will create an investment in rural Australia for future generations, providing much needed habitat and landscape renewal through the planting of Australian native species.
Science for Schools
Today’s school students will be the scientists, policy-makers and voters of tomorrow. So they need a strong grounding in science to be able to participate. With this in mind, CSIRO have set up a Science for Schools scheme offering relevant examples to primary and high school students of the value and relevance of science to industry, communities and society.
Through this scheme, CSIRO aims to:
-
alert school students, their families and teachers of science to the contribution of scientific research by CSIRO and other organisations to our community
-
encourage students to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology
-
engage, enthuse and educate students, teachers and the community about science and its applications.
Through its range of school education programs, CSIRO reaches over half a million students, teachers, parents and community members across Australia each year. Tenzing is proud to be a participant in this scheme with both Clare and Zach volunteering their time in Queensland and Tasmanian schools respectively.
The scheme is still in it’s early stages and we look forward to providing progress reports as Zach and Clare get into their new roles. In the meantime, details on the scheme can be found at www.scientistsinschools.edu.au
Australia is no stranger to wild weather and the State Emergency Service (SES) is the primary response agency for storm and flood emergencies and provides support to other emergency service agencies.
With the full support of Tenzing management, Vicki has chosen to volunteer her time to the Queensland SES to give a little back to the community which she has chosen to call home. In return, she will receive training in practical and life skills which will undoubtedly have an influence on her professional development too. For more information, visit www.emergency.qld.gov.au/ses
